The Freer Gallery is free to visit and is part of the Smithsonian Institution and open daily 10:30 to 5.

The Gallery's placard for the sculpture indicates it is from the railing at the Bharhut Stupa in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is made of sandstone and dated to the 2nd century B.C. At the center a thick garland of flowers adorns an empty throne which represents the Buddha...who at the time was rarely depicted.
