Mac's actually had its start in 1949 in a little tin shack on St. Paul and Young Streets in downtown Dallas, but it wasn't until Bill McDonald took his chopped beef sandwiches and bottled soft drinks to Main Street and Exposition Avenue that Mac's really began. The first location opened there in 1955, and then moved to 408 Exposition Avenue -- not too far from here -- in 1968, before settling here in 1982. "Texas Monthly" barbecue editor Daniel Vaughn once listed Mac's among his ten favorite barbecue joints in Texas. Today, Mac's is run by his son, Bill McDonald, Jr.
They are open from 11 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
They also cater, and they have quite a bit of room for everybody. If you're dining in, you'll order at the counter, and they'll call you when your food is ready. Give it about ten to fifteen minutes for carry-out. They are very well-known for being friendly.
You can do plates or sandwiches, with the option of ordering food by the pound if you're planning to take your food with you. Your selections are sliced/chopped brisket, pork ribs, ham, sausage (hot links or regular) turkey, Frito pie, and baked potatoes. Your sides include fries (which are terrific), mac and cheese, onion rings, fried okra, potato salad, chips, slaw, and a variety of beans. Soft drinks and iced tea are available
