This bench, in honor of Harold Orton Todd CM/3 tells the story of the fateful day of July 30, 1945. An engraving of the U.S.S. Indianapolis is shown on the bench, together with this wording:
HAROLD ORTON TODD CM/3
March 12, 1916 - July 30, 1945
U.S.S. Indiapolis
Heavy Cruiser
Carried the first atyomic warheads to Guam that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on July 30, 1945 - thus ending World War II in the Pacific.
On their return trip home, a few minutes past midnight a Japanese submarine fired two torpedoes just below the waterline. The ship sank in less than 15 minutes. Of the 1196 officers and men aboard, only 316 survived.
On the front side of the bench are the words: This monument is dedicated to those who gave their lives that night in the South Pacific.
