The Catholic University Library has had a troubled past. During both wars it was damaged by bombings. Many thousands of historical Flemish books were destroyed.
The current building was designed by Whitney Warren in the Flemish Renaissance Style. In the front of the building you can see busts of Queen Elizabeth, King Albert and Prince Leopold.
For the reconstruction, financing was done by an American group headed by Herbert Hoover. Donations were received from many American colleges and high schools. To show their appreciation for there gift, the library installed the names of all the schools around the outside of the building. If you are interested to see if your alma mater is listed, just go inside to the reception desk and ask to view the list.
To enter the library, you must be affiliated with KU or one of the member schools. Otherwise, you must pay for a day pass.
