When the Viceroy of Egypt gave Cleopatra's Needle to the people of Britain in 1819, he had no idea that the gift would not be taken to the UK until the late 1870s, and that six men would die in a storm on the journey.
Four plaques line the base of Cleopatra's Needle on the Victoria Embankment. One of them commemorates the loss of 6 men who died trying to save the crew of the obelisk transport ship CLEOPATRA, which was endangered during a fierce and unexpected storm that struck the Bay of Biscay during the voyage, endangering the CLEOPATRA and her crew.
That plaque reads as follows:
"William Askin
James Gardiner
Joseph Benbow
Michael Burns
William Donald
William Patman
Perished in a bold attempt to succor the crew of the obelisk ship CLEOPATRA during the storm of October 14th 1877"
