The dock is on the bank of the River Lune and was built in 1787 to replace an older dock at the town of Lancaster that was further inland.
The Lancaster Canal was completed in 1797 and passed within 3 miles of Glasson Dock. It was realised that building a branch line of the canal to the dock would increase the volume of traffic on the canal, and improve communications for the dock.
This lock was built to connect the canal to the dock, and then this swing bridge erected to allow Tithebarn Hill to pass the end of the dock.
The bridge is made of steel and because is single track it is traffic light controlled. Although only single track there is room for pedestrians next to the roadway. It crosses over the middle of the lock chamber and is opened when boats pass between the dock and the canal.
