The chalet was constructed in 1932 under the mayoralty of Camillien Houde as a make-work project during the Great Depression.[2] The French Beaux Arts structure was designed by Montreal architect Aristide Beaugrand-Champagne (1876-1950).
The walls of its spacious interior are decorated with pictures tracing the history of Montréal, including many painted by famous artists. The Kondiaronk scenic lookout in front of the chalet offers a striking view of the downtown area and the St. Lawrence River.
