The sign is set near a religious mural and reads:
"IN HIS REPORT OF 1787, GOVERNOR DON PEDRO FAGES
SAYS OF MISSION SAN GABRIEL ARCANGEL, 'MISSION SAN
GABRIEL, DISTANT 18 LEAGUES FROM SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO,
OCCUPIES A BEAUTIFUL PLAIN WITH FACILITIES FOR ESTA-
BLISHING A POPULOUS SETTLEMENT. THE PRESENT ESTA-
BLISHMENT HAS LAND AND WATER IN ABUNDANCE. THE
HARVESTS OF ALL GRAINS CORRESPOND TO THESE GOOD
QUALITIES, AND IT CANNOT BE DENIED THAT THE ACTIVITY
AND EFFORTS OF THE MISSION FATHERS HAVE EQUALED
THE FERTILITY OF THE FIELDS CULTIVATED BY THEM.'
'IN THIS WAY THEY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PROVIDE
ABUNDANTLY FOR THE MAINTENANCE OF ITS INDIANS;HAVE
SUCCORED THE GREATEST NEEDS WHICH HAVE BEEN
EXPERIENCED IN THE TERRITORY. THEIR HELP REACHING
EVEN AS FAR AS BAJA CALIFORNIA; HAVE FACILITATED THE
EXPEDITIONS AND VERY COSTLY ENTERPRISES, WHICH
WOULD HAVE BEEN ALMOST IMPRACTICABLE WITHOUT ITS
SUPPLIES. IT IS TO A GREAT EXTENT TRUE THAT SAN
GABRIEL ARCANGEL HAS SUSTAINED THE CONQUEST OF
ALTA CALIFORNIA."
