Virgil was a military tract which gave soldiers land for payment of services. "The Town was named by Albany officials in honor of the Roman poet, Virgil. The Town was first settled in 1792."

"The Way We Were: A Picture History of Virgil" (1979) by the Historical Society is available at the Town Hall.
