The Memorial is dedicated to the Covert Family. John Covert (1768-1843) was born in Sussex, England and moved directly to Upper Canada in 1820, settling in Hamilton Township next to the bustling village of Cobourg. Covert senior gained notoriety as a magistrate and businessman, becoming by the early 1830s, the Colonel of the First Regiment of the Northumberland Militia. Volume 7 of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, 1938, states that ‘His conservative politics, especially his efforts to embarrass reform-minded men in the regiment, led to a court martial and his subsequent dismissal from command.’ John Covert then settled in New Lodge Farm east of Cobourg in a grand, regency style cottage. This property remains intact to this day, although it was sold out of the Covert-Massie family in 1998 to the Jehovah’s Witness Eastern Conference.
