The Young Family
According to the military personnel file, John Bertram Young enlisted with the First Newfoundland Regiment at St. John's, 28 December 1914. By profession, Bert was a grocer. His next-of-kin was his father Robert Young of Forest Road.
Private Young arrived in Alexandria and then Cairo in August 1915. By September he was in Galipolli.
In December 1915, suffering from the effects of frostbite, Young was sent to England for recovery. He would not rejoin the Regiment until December 1916. In the meantime, Young was promoted to Corporal, then Sergeant.
Sergeant Young was killed in action only five weeks after rejoining the battalion.
