A maroon and white, the colors of Springfield College, greets visitors to Springfield College travelling from the east along Alden Street. Since Alden Street is a busy public street bisecting the campus it also serves to notify motorists of pedestrian traffic ahead.
The arch is inscribed on both side with the seal of the College on each end and the inscription:

BIRTHPLACE OF BASKETBALL
Springfield College is known as the birthplace of basketball. Dr. James Naismith, an instructor at the former YMCA Training School which is now Springfield College invented the game in 1891.

As it grew it moved its campus to its present location one mile south to the area around Watershops Pond. In 1912, it became the International YMCA College and finally, in 1954, Springfield College.
