The sightly larger than life bronze sculpture of Lord Ninian, is shown wearing a first World War period British Army officers uniform.

The inscription reads:

LORD NINIAN EDWARD / CRICHTON STUART / MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT / FOR CARDIFF / COWBRIDGE & LLANTRISANT / LIEUT-COLONEL 6TH BATT / WELSH REG- TERRITORIAL / BORN 15TH MAY 1883 / FELL IN FRANCE / AT THE BATTLE OF LOOS / FIGHTING BRAVELY / FOR HIS COUNTRY / 2ND OCTOBER 1915.

Description from Public Sculptures Website:
"Standing figure on moulded stone pedestal. In military dress. Right leg bent at knee and extended forward with right foot placed on a rock. Right forearm outstretched and right hand holding pair of binoculars (binocular case strung behind back). Left arm slightly extended with left hand holding papers and a riding crop. Base of statue is roughly-hewn rock.
A public meeting was held in Cardiff in November 1915 for the purpose of considering a memorial. Fund opened and large general committee appointed which was 'representative of all sections of the constituency.'
Lord Ninian Edward Crichton-Stuart was born in 1883 and was the second son of the Third Marquis of Bute. Educated at Harrow and Oxford, he was commissioned in 1903 into the 3rd Battalion of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders and then served for two years in 1st Battalion Scots Guards. Married the Hon. Ismay Preston in 1906 and left the army after his marriage to concentrate on politics. In 1907 he was adopted as the Unionist candidate for the United Boroughs of Cardiff, Cowbridge and Llantrisant. Lost the election to D.A. Thomas in January 1910 but was successful in winning back the seat later that year. Took command of the 6th Welsh Battalion in 1912."
