The two lions are mirror images of each other and stand on either side of the west entrance to the Bridge of Lions. The lion on the north side of the bridge stands with its left front paw resting on a sphere. The lion on the south side of the bridge stands with its right front paw resting on a sphere. They appear to be looking at one another.
The lions are a pair of Medici lions (visit link) made of Carrara marble that guard the bridge, which was begun in 1925 and completed in 1927 across Matanzas Bay. The lions were originally installed in 1927, removed in February 2005 for reconstruction of the bridge, and returned in March 2011.
