This depot served passenger trains of the Rock Island Railroad between Peoria, IL and Chicago, IL. The building was donated to the Chillicothe Histroical Society in 1980, and now is a museum displaying railroad artifacts and memorabilia. On the north side is a restored Santa Fe caboose. The former Santa Fe also went through Chillicothe and its tracks crossed the Rock Island track about a mile north of this depot.
Of course, now the Santa Fe is part of the BNSF RR, and the tracks in front of this depot are still in use and are owned and operated by the Iowa Interstate Railroad.
At the time of this writing, the museum was open on the first Sunday of each month, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and on Wednesdays, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. At other times, one can still walk around the outside of the building. One should check the following web site for current open hours in case changes are made:
