[FR] Elle abandonne le Palais Garnier pour s’établir près du parc de Nanterre, près de Paris. Alors que les élèves allaient au lycée l’après-midi, après les heures de danse du matin à l’Opéra, et rentraient chez eux le soir, ils allaient devenir internes.

Christian de Portzamparc gagne alors le concours en proposant de préserver ces coupures entre ces trois grands moments de la journée par une dissociation de l’école en trois bâtiments distincts : le bâtiment de la danse, celui de l’enseignement et de l’administration et l’aile des chambres tournée vers le parc.
Une verrière articule les circulations entre ces trois parties et diaphragme les ouvertures vers la ville et le parc. Un quatrième monde, jardin et cour, légumes, fleurs, est offert aux enfants et aux adolescents. Dans le bâtiment de danse, le grand escalier central en hélice distribue, en une promenade panoramique, les studios de danse et fait apparaître les salles, le parc et les grands paliers où les élèves se retrouvent.

Les dispositions des chambres ont été étudiées avec les élèves.
La danse est une célébration de l’espace. L’architecture est le support du mouvement. La salle est au danseur ce que la toile blanche est pour le peintre. Voir pour bouger, bouger pour voir.

[EN] The school left the Palais Garnier (Paris, France) to move closer to the Parc de Nanterre, near Paris (France). The pupils would live and work in the same building.

Christian de Portzamparc was awarded the contract by suggesting protecting these cuts between these three key moments in each student’s day by a dissociation of the school into three distinct buildings: the dance building, the teaching and administrative building, and the accommodation wing turned towards the park.

A glass structure links the movement between the three sections and modulates relations between the city and the park. The teenagers and children are invited to explore a fourth world: a garden and courtyard with flowers facing the park. In the dance building, the grand spiral staircase leads up to dance studios positioned along a panoramic walkway, gradually revealing the various rooms, distant views, the park and the landings where students meet.

The layout of student rooms were developed with the pupils.
The dance is a celebration of space. The architecture is the medium of the movement. The dancing room belongs to the dancer what the painter’s white canvas is for the artist. Seeing in order to move, moving in order to see.
