This is one of a handful of murals in Monterey honoring the characters in John Steinbeck's novel "Cannery Row" which is set in this neighborhood. This mural depicts three men, sitting beside boxes of canned fish holding their guitars. Two of the men seem to be playing while the third watches. The sign accompanying the mural is a mural in itself...depicting an open sardine can which has the following quotation from the novel:
"'The nature of parties has been
imperfectly studied. It is however,
generally understood that a party
has a pathology, that it is a kind of
an individual and it is likely to be
a very perverse individual. And it is
also generally understood that a party
ever goes the way it is
planned or intended.'
