Hinter der Mozartstraße, in Richtung der Feuersäule erinnert
ein steinernes Denkmal heute an das Gefangenenlager.
Hier fanden Unterkunft 12809 Russen, Franzosen, Engländer und Belgier.
Schätzungsweise 15000 bis 20000 Kriegsgefangene durchliefen das Kriegsgefangenenlager Zerbst.
Die in 56 Baracken untergebrachten Soldaten wurden von einem Landsturm-Bataillon bewacht.
Viele Gefangene starben an Unterernährung und Seuchen.
Sie wurden auf dem Muchelfriedhof beigesetzt.
Das Wort Muchel oder Moch weist auf ein sumpfiges mooriges Gelände mit "mucheligen Geruch" hin.
Der Muchelfriedhof wurde zwischen 1916 und 1920 angelegt. Früher standen hier um die 450 Holzkreuze.
Ein Denkmal welches bis heute erhalten ist, deutet auf eine Gefangenenzahl von 12809 hin.
Früher fand sich noch ein Adler auf dem Bauwerk. Leider wurde das Denkmal in den Nachkriegsjahren des 2. Weltkrieges zu Schießübungen mißbraucht.
In den neunziger Jahren wurde das Gelände unter Mitwirkung der Bundeswehr in Ordnung gebracht.
Die Gedenksäule mit der Inschrift " pro patria" (für das Vaterland) erhebt sich als Blickpunkt der Anlage des ehemaligen Exerzierplatzes.
In den Landessprachen der Toten wird diesen "ewiges Gedenken" versprochen.
