The Norwich State Hospital was created to treat the mentally ill and for those found guilty of crimes due to insanity. Thru the years the hospital also treated patients that had a chemical dependency in later years. From 1931 to 1939 tubercular patients were treated.
The hospital started as a single building and expanded to over 40 buildings. The hospital became a self sustaining entity, with patient facilities, patient living quarters, doctor and staff living quarters, greenhouses, employee club, barn, garages and paint shop.
The property sat unused after it closing and seriously deteriorated. Beginning in 2011 the buildings were demolished leaving only 4 buildings standing. The most prominent building still standing is the Administration Building built in 1908.
