Population: Wikipedia shows population as 1,592 BUT that is for the ENTIRE 85606 Zip Code; town is about 60
"Cochise was created as a fuel stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad in the 1880's. Its peak population was about 3000 people. The town has never really died although there are under 50 people living there today. The hotel is open to the public and is full of great antiques. Today, the trains still roar through Cochise but no longer stop as the need for coal and water has long been extinguished." ~
Cochise (co-cheze) is derived from "cheis", an Apache word meaning wood. On the l881 Territorial Map of Arizona, the county was identified as "Cachise.. The Mexican pronunciation was “kawcheze-say" (at least to my understanding). The county had its share of bad hombres, slick operators, con men, Indian attacks (the surrender of Geronimo) and the (Fimbres ranch raid of the early 1930's). Some might say “things never change".
