An 8' high bronze figure of a Union soldier stands on a 12' high by 5.5' square granite base. The soldier is wearing a knee length double breasted coat, a cape, and a cap. He is holding the barrel of his rifle vertically with both hands, left over right in front. The rifler butt rest on the plinth by his right foot.
The sculpture was created by Heinrich Manger and cast at the Ames Manufacturing Company foundry in Chicopee, MA in 1883. It was dedicated at Chester VT in 1884. Each side of the base has a large bronze plaque fill with the names of Vermont soldiers who served during the Civil War. The web link, q.v., contains the listing of the names inscribed on the plaques.
A bronze plaque on the front of the base is inscribed:
ROLL OF HONOR TO THOSE WHO
SLEEP WHERE THEY FELL
followed by a list of 44 names, companies and regiments. The remaining three plaques have the inscription:
TO HER PATRIOT SONS CHESTER
REARS THIS TESTIMONIAL
followed by a list of names, companies and regiments.
