I 1986 opstod ideen om et musikhus og foreningen Musikhusets Venner blev stiftet. I 1999 blev det besluttet at huset også skulle omfatte en forsknings- og uddannelsesdel. En international arkitektkonkurrence blev vundet af Coop Himmelb(l)au.
Huset består af mere end 20.000 m2 fordelt på ni plan med bl.a. fire koncertsale, fem scener, en restaurant, en spændende foyer samt undervisnings- og administrationsfaciliteter. De faste beboere er Aalborg Symfoniorkester, Det Jyske Musikkonservatoriums Aalborgafdeling, Aalborg Universitets musikuddannelser, Center for Dansk Jazzhistorie, Musikkens Spisehus samt Musikkens Hus’ egen virksomhed.
In 1986 the idea of a Musichouse began and the Society The Friends of the Musichouse was founded. In 1999 it was decided that the house should also house a research and educational part.
The house consists of more than 20.000 suare meters in 9 levels with for instance four koncerts halls, five stages, a restaurant, an exciting foyer and educational and administration facilities. Permanent residents of the house are: Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Academy of Music/Aalborg, Musical Educations of Aalborg University, the Danish Jazz history Center, Musikkens Spisehus( restaurant) and Musikkens Hus’ own business activities.
