In Waltham, on the Waltham Common, is this monument for those who served in the U.S. Civil War.

The Waltham Common is bounded by Main Street, Moody Street, Central Street and Elm Street. The monument is closest to Elm Street, behind the Waltham City Hall.

The monument is a four-sided obelisk surrounded by an eight sided border with a railing. The monument has several levels to it. The top comes together to a fancy point and with triangular dormers surrounding a star on each side. The mostly plain column - one one side is a a shield, flags and wreath - rises from a base that gradually widens. Words carved simply say, "To Our Nation's Defenders." Below that on the sides are names carved. Near the base is the year, "1866."
