Down the road a few kliks from the Oyama Community Garden, the Winfield Community Garden is quite large considering the size of the community.

PIC In fact, this is one of the larger community gardens in the valley, with generously sized plots. All the plots are enclosed by cedar 2X6s and are raised slightly. Each is at least 8' X 16' in size. There are 40 beds of this size in the garden, with a playground/relaxation area in the centre. All beds are occupied and all were doing quite well.

This is a member garden of Central Okanagan Community Gardens, (COCG) an organization begun in 2003. To date the COCG has built 16 gardens and is yet to catch up with demand. Gardening in the fruit and wine capital of Canada is a seriously popular pastime.

The Winfield Community Garden is located at 11187 Bottom Wood Lake Rd, on land provided by Paul and Judy Shoemaker of Nurturing Nature Organics. This garden was funded by the Lake Country Rotary Club and has 40 large plots of varying sizes. Shed, tools, water access and compost bins are available. In the fall of 2010, artwork designed by Ed Goodon with the assistance of clients from KDSCL (Kelowna and District Society for Community Living) was installed at the site. It was supported through a Central Okanagan Foundation grant.

Community gardening is an activity for persons of all ages and abilities. Gardeners have access to water, compost bins, and tools at each gardening site and are encouraged to grow vegetables and flowering plants. It is each gardener’s responsibility to maintain their plot and surrounding areas using sustainable methods. The use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers is not allowed. Community activities and work bees are an integral part of each garden, providing opportunities for fun and community building. The Central Okanagan Community Gardens Society believes “Gardens Grow Healthy Communities.”
