Een andere -meer aannemelijke- verklaring is dat de naam Bakkerswaal voortkomt uit het oud Hollandse woord bak, dat achter betekent (komt ook:voor in bakwetering). De Bakkerswaal zou dan de achterste waal betekenen. De voorste waal zou dan dichtgeslibt zijn en thans het rietgors vormen.

Hoelang de Bakkerswaal al in gebruik is als eendenkooi is onduidelijk. Vast staat dat de kooi al wordt genoemd in een stuk uit 1585, dat in het bezit is van het Streekarchief Midden Holland te Gouda. De oudst bekende kaart waarop deze eendenkooi staat aangeheven, dateert uit 1683. Bij het ontstaan van de waal, behoorde deze bij de Heerlijkheid Lekzicht, evenals vele omliggende landerijen. Vele eigendomswisselingen later, verwierf Het Zuid-Hollands landschap de eigendom in 1941. Kort na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd de kooi verhuurd aan Arie Berkouwer. Na hem was Bas Tukker 17 jaar de kooiker en sinds 1984 is dat Hans Zantinge.

De eendenkooi is niet meer in gebruik en dient nu als vogelbroedplaats. Om de plas heen ligt een dicht bos waarachter de eenden zich veilig en beschut voelen. Omdat dit gebied al tientallen jaren wordt beschermd, vind je hier veel zeldzame planten zoals vogelmelk en koekoeksbloemen. Het krioelt er van de vogels, van boomkruiper, zwartkop, groene en bonte specht tot de ijsvogel.

U krijg de coordinaten van het begin van het pad om naar het scherm te gaan (een betonnen trap). Als u bij het scherm staat hoeveel kijkgaten ziet u? Alle gaten, zowel smal, breed, klein en groot.
