"This bench mark was used during the First primary levelling, England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 283.1900 feet [86.3163 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included as a side level on the Coventry to Lincoln levelling line. The surveyor's description was No. 81(b). Willoughby Church. Bolt in South-west angle of tower ; 2.18 ft. above surface"

The tower dates from the 13th century and is of two stages with an early 14th century broach spire with two tiers of four lucarnes.
