This is quite a story. Fear, panic and distrust during the Civil War in 1862, caused the forming of a Citizens Court to try many local residents and resulted in the hanging of 40 people, and the killing of two who tried to escape. The story is memorialized on two large granite markers dedicated on October 18, 2014.

They stand in Georgia Davis Bass Memorial Park, along with a patio of 54 donated pavers for the project.

Also, standing nearby is a two-sided historical marker dedicated to this event.

The pavers have the names of many local citizens, some of whom are descendants of those hanged.

A non-profit organization has been formed and a dramatization has been created of this event.
