The Black Bear is the school mascot of Harlan County High School, a public high school located in the unincorporated community of Rosspoint, Kentucky, served by the post office of another unincorporated community, Baxter. The school opened in August 2008 to replace the three previously separate public high schools in the Harlan County district: Evarts High School, James A. Cawood, and Cumberland High School.
Bear #1 was completed in 2011 and was a joint project of The Brushy Fork Institute, Cumberland Tourism & Tri Cities Heritage Development Corp.
This bear was painted by community volunteers and the Harlan County High School art teacher Rhonda Robinson and her art students.
