EN: Chilpen is the name of a nature reserve area between Diegten and Känerkinden. The area has the area of about 30 hectares and is sparsely covered with pine trees. The nutrient-poor marl soil dries quickly with heat and turns into a steppe with a Mediterranean character; when it rains, it becomes a very marshy swamp. Therefore, at this location marsh plants and drought specialists coexist, including many extremely rare species. Around a quarter of all known plant species in the canton of Basel-Land have been found here. Many rare animal species can also be found, for example a large number of various particular butterfly species.

Because the area has been used heavily by the population for centuries, no forest could overgrow the area which would have displaced the rare small plants. Also today, the zone needs intensive care to preserve the current status. This is carried out by the organization Pro Natura, with the support of the Canton.

DE: Chilpen ist der Name eines Naturschutzgebiets zwischen Diegten und Känerkinden. Das Gebiet hat die Fläche von etwa 30 Hektaren und ist spärlich mit Föhren bewachsen. Der nährstoffarme Mergelboden trocknet bei Wärme schnell aus und verwandelt sich in eine Steppe mit südländischem Charakter, bei Regen wird er sehr sumpfig. Deshalb kommen an diesem Ort Sumpfpflanzen und Trockenheitsspezialisten gleich nebeneinander vor, darunter viele äusserst seltene Spezies. Rund ein viertel aller im Kanton Basel-Land bekannten Pflanzenarten wurden hier schon gefunden. Auch viele seltene Tierarten kommen vor, z.B. ein grosse Anzahl verschiendere Tagfalterarten.

Da das Gebiet von der Bevölkerung jahrhundertelang stark genutzt wurde, konnte sich kein Wald bilden, der die seltenen Kleinpflanzen verdrängt hätte. Auch heute braucht das Gebiet intensive Pflege, damit dieser Bestand erhalten werden kann. Dies wird von der Organisation Pro Natura mit Unterstützung des Kantons ausgeführt.
