The Coal Dam was originally constructed as a storage dam for water supplies for steam engines in the late 1890s. In 1947 it was increased in size to 200m by 50m and used for coal storage, The brown coal from Collie used on the steam engines had to be kept wet otherwise if too dry it could self-ignite.
When steam trains were phased out the dam deteriorated and the loading gantry that was once here was removed , the piles that supported the rail lines can be seen on either side of the dam
