On August 16, 1987, Northwest Airlines flight 255 was en-route to Phoenix, AZ from Detroit Metropolitan Airport, Romulus, Michigan with 149 passengers and 6 crew. Just minutes after take-off, the plane crashed on a hilltop near I-94 and Middlebelt Road. Of the persons on board, 148 passengers and 6 crewmembers were killed; 1 passenger, a 4-year-old child, survived. On the ground, two persons were killed and one person was injured seriously. Today, a memorial containing the names of the 156 people who lost their lives stands on that hilltop.
