The stamp commemorates the 50th anniversary of Sherbrook University and shows the Georges-Cabana pavilion. This building is centrally located on campus and houses the university’s management and administration functions as well as its Humanities Library. It is one of over thirty buildings on campus, most of which are interconnected by a series of underground pedestrian tunnels (the winters can be brutal here!).
When established in 1954, Sherbrooke was a Roman Catholic university but has since become largely non-sectarian in nature. There are currently around 40,000 students enrolled at Sherbrooke (the city itself only has a population of about 140,000). There is a satellite campus in Longueuil (closer to Montreal) which is dedicated primarily to post-graduate studies.
