Taken from Wikipedia, "Mission San Rafael Arcángel was founded in 1817 as a medical asistencia ("sub-mission") of Mission San Francisco de Asís. It was a hospital to treat sick Native Americans, making it Alta California's first sanitarium. The weather was much better than in San Francisco, which helped the ill get better. It was intended to be a stand-alone mission but nevertheless grew and prospered and it was granted full mission status on October 19, 1822."
Taken from the book, "Of Mission San Rafael Archangel little remains but a few fragments of tile. The building was demolished for its timber in 1860; nine years later a new church was built on the site, but this in turn was destroyed by fire in 1917."
The building today is smaller than your typical mission. Most missions are large, on a grand scale, while the San Rafael Mission is only 50 feet by 300 feet at most. The mission square consists of a church which was built way after the mission was established here. Originally, the mission was going to be a sub-mission of the San Francisco Mission. It was meant as a hospital for sick native americans. More sick arrived and more funding was requested, eventually giving the the sub-mission it's mission status in the early 1800s.
