Eighteen artists have been chosen by the Springfield Central Cultural District to paint and beautify electrical utility boxes in the downtown area of Springfield. The first boxes were painted on Monday May 23, 2016 and the program will continue throughout the month and beyond. Many of the paintings will be sponsored by local organizations and businesses.
One of the first utility boxes to be finished was painted by Gina Beavers. She has said "I lived on Mattoon Street for 10 years which was glorious and one of the things they had was a cherry blossom festival in April and I wanted to commemorate that (with my art)."
The utility box on the corner of Chestnut and mattoon is painted a bright red to match the red brick row houses which line both sided of Mattoon Street. Cherry blossoms are painted against this background. The name of the sponsor, the Mattoon Street Association, appears in black script at the front of the top of the street and sidewalk sides of the utility box.
