The descisions of the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 was the permission for the protestants, to build this and two other peace churches. However, a number of conditions must be met: stones and bricks were banned, only wood, clay and straw could be used. It was also not allowed, to provide the church with tower or bells. The construction had to be completed within one year. The only place to built the church was outside the walls. On 23. August 1656 the foundation stone was laid. After only ten months of construction, on 24. June 1657, the first worship could be celebrated.
The church can accommodated about 7500 people, inclouding about 3000 on seats. The interior ist held in the Baroque style. Today the church community has only 130 members. But guests are welcome!
