The MFAH’s Museum of American Decorative Arts delivers just that – in depth information on American furnishings spanning three centuries, 1620-1870. The house itself is a Latin-Colonial creation of Houston architect John F Staub, built in 1927 for Ima Hogg, daughter of a Texas governor. Ms Hogg was a prolific collector of early American decorative arts. Throughout the 28 rooms of furnishings, you’ll learn things such as the difference between New York, Philadelphia and Newport designs.

The house itself is located in the River Oaks subdivision on the south side of Buffalo Bayou. Because the neighbors in this wealthy neighborhood were concerned about the traffic and people the museum might attract, the entrance was moved to the north side of the bayou. A suspension bridge was built to the property from the parking lot in an isolated section of Memorial Park.

The Bayou Bend gardens surrounding the museum are an incredible combination of English and French styles. Sculpted, manicured lawns melt into the natural (but heavily manipulated) Southern pine and magnolia forest beyond.
