The area of this waymark is known locally as
'Sully Flats,' land previously owned by the alleged outlaw
Jack Sully, who, with family members, is buried here. He owned
one of the largest cattle herds and grazed them on open
prairie near here for the fall cattle markets. Viewing south from
here, you will see for miles from high ground along the South Fork
of the Whetstone Creek.
This small cemetery was established in 1894 and later abandoned.
John (Jack) Sully is a legendary figure in this region, with lots
of tales, rumors, and myths about his exploits.
Sully was a notorious character of whom much has been written, and
who has been charged with numerous crimes, the greater number of
which are probably fictitous. (Quoted from the Jack Sully
Biography, Charles Mix Co., which appears in the 1906 Standard
Atlas of Charles Mix County, page 54.
The museum in Wagner has some Sully memorabilia, including his
deck of poker cards.
