This is a one way tunnel with no towpath. Snarestone village lies directly overhead and horses were walked through the village whilst boats were legged through. Main traffic were coal boats from the coal fields of Moira to the north.
If you follow the old line of the canal (now disused north of Snarestone but being restored) you will see markers for the different coal seams and their depths.
This tunnel is unusual in that it has a kink in it so it is very difficult to see if a boat is coming the other way.
