DE: Die Burg Altwied ist die Stammburg der Grafen zu Wied. Die Höhenburg stand im heutigen Neuwieder Stadtteil Altwied im Landkreis Neuwied im nördlichen Rheinland-Pfalz. Die Ruine ist im Besitz der Familie zu Wied und kann besichtigt werden.
Burg Altwied ist nicht zu verwechseln mit der fast gleichnamigen kurkölnischen Burg Altenwied, die rund 25 km weiter aufwärts im Wiedbachtal bei Neustadt liegt und aus thüringischem Besitz stammt. Im Gegensatz zu dieser oberen Burg Wied (Altenwied, Kurköln) wurde die untere Burg Wied (Altwied, Grafschaft Wied) zunächst „Niederwied“ genannt, so z. B. 1301 „comicia de Niderwide“, später gelegentlich auch „Grafenwied“ und erst ab der Gründung der Stadt Neuwied 1653 „Altwied“. Im 19. Jahrhundert und noch bis 1930 verwendete man die Bezeichnungen „Niederaltwied“ und „Oberaltwied“.
Die Ruine der Burg, die eine Wehreinheit mit dem gleichnamigen Burgflecken bildete, liegt rund 5 km nördlich der Stadtmitte von Neuwied im unteren Engtal der Wied auf einem vorspringenden Felsriegel, der von drei Seiten von der Wied umflossen wird, in unmittelbarer Nähe der Wiedtalstraße (L 255). Mit einer Höhe von 25 Metern über der Talsohle wird sie überragt von den Höhenzügen rechts und links der Wied. Die Ruine selbst liegt auf rund 100 m ü. NN.

Burg Altwied is not to be confused with the almost eponymous Electoral Cologne Castle Altenwied that up, around 25 km further Wiedbachtal at Neustadt and comes from Thuringian possession. Unlike the upper castle Wied (Altenwied, Electoral Cologne) was the lower castle Wied initially called (Altwied, county Wied) "Niederwied" said z. B. 1301 "comicia de Niderwide", later occasionally "Grafenwied" and until the founding of the city Neuwied 1653 "Altwied". In the 19th century and until 1930, used the terms "Niederaltwied" and "Oberaltwied".
The castle ruins, which formed a military unit with the same borough of the city center of Neuwied in the lower narrow valley of Wied is situated about 5km north on a projecting rock barrier, which is encircled on three sides by the Wied, near the Wiedtalstraße (L 255). With a height of 25 meters above the valley floor it is dominated by the mountain ranges right and left of Wied. The ruin itself is situated at approximately 100 meters above sea level. NN.
