Large, detailed diorama located in the Patriots and Heroes Memorial Park in Williamsville, NY. Commissioned by local philanthropist Russell Salvadore; the artist is Donald Parrino.
The main marker on the work reads:
WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL
BATTLE OF THE BULGE
The scene depicts a US Army infantry section overtaking a German tank advancing through the shattered village of Bastogne while on the advance to Berlin in 1944.
The accompanying information marker reads:
This memorial was inspired by artist Don Parrino and Russ Salvatore's desire to honour our country's service personnel and veterans. Don created the World War II scene of the Battle of The Bulge to complement his other sculptures in the park. The diorama shows a German tank crashing through a house while the tank's commander is seen lifting the hatch only to be met by a GI bearing a bazooka aimed at the tank's tracks which was the only vulnerable part of the Panzer 4. Another GI mans a machine gun and radios for help. A soldier carrying his wounded buddy away from the action meets the viewer with Dramatic Reality.
Bastogne, an American-occupied town, held out long enough for General Patton to turn the battle in favor of the Americans. When the Americans were asked to surrender, the now-famous remark was replied, "Nuts!".
Don used no formal plans in creating this sculpture, including the tank which was made by hand.
