In Bernhard Schlink's novel "The Reader", a woman, Hanna has had an affair in Germany with a 15 year-old boy., Michael. Years later, Michael, now a law student is in attendance when Hanna is put on trial for her part in some horrible events at Auschwitz. Through testimony, the reader learns that Hanna was in a position to decide some of the women and girls who would continue in their jobs. Of course, the ones not chosen would be sent to their deaths. Hanna was also present in the aftermath of an explosion which trapped several women inside a burning church... and she is accused of inaction to help.
