In April 2014, the Greater Victoria Public Library board approved the creation of a new branch in the Westhills residential development in Langford, to be located in the new YMCA-YWCA building. The ground was broken on January 21, 2014 and the library had a soft opening on April 30, 2016, followed by the grand opening celebrations on May 14, 2016.
The 4000-square-foot library started with approximately 16000 brand new books, which were kept at the branch for a month before being released to move between the other branches. The library has Vancouver Island's first book vending machine in the foyer, allowing residents to check out books at any time of day. There is also a pair of automated check-in machines in the foyer that automatically scan the books and remove them from the user's card, then sorts them using a conveyor belt system for easy re-stocking.
