This bridge was a critical water crossing on the OST in the 1930s. Its construction did away with the necessity to cross Chef Menteur Pass by ferry.

The Chef Menteur Pass Bridge on US 90 carried the OST over this waterway in the 1930s. It was a critical link on the OST whose construction rendered the ferry crossing here obsolete.

As the US 90 heads west into New Orleans, the OST becomes Old Gentilly Road, which goes through downtown New Orleans on Canal Street to St Charles Ave, then down St Charles through the Garden District before turning onto Louisiana Ave to cross the Mississippi River to Harvey LA.
