"Dressé entre 4000 et 5000 avant notre ère sur ce site du Vieux-Mans (aujourd'hui Cité Plantagenêt), le menhir est le plus vieux témoin de histoire mancelle.
Cette pierre levée, longtemps considérée comme le "nombril" du Mans, a été l'objet de divers cultes faisant de lui le centre de l'univers ou encore un symbole de fertilité. Signe païen, il a été sauvé de la destruction par Saint-Julien, venu christianiser Le Mans au IVe siècle. Le religieux l'aurait coiffé d'une croix disparue depuis. Le menhir a été accolé à la cathédrale lors de sa construction. Il s'agit du dernier témoin d'un lieu où se trouvaient d'autres pierres sacrées." (visit link)
