The pay telephone was invented in 1889 by William Gray. In 1891, Gray formed the Gray Telephone Pay Station Company and installed pay telephones all across America. The first public pay telephone was installed by inventor William Gray at a bank in Hartford, CT. Interestingly, the design was "postpay." You would insert coins to pay for the call after the call was over.
A blue sign about 10' above the sidewalk is inscribed:
WORLD'S
FIRST PAY TELEPHONE
-------------------
INVENTED BT WILLIAM GRAY
AND DEVELOPED BY GEORGE A. LONG,
WAS INSTALLED ON THIS CORNER IN 1889
