Ulysses Franklin "Frank" Grant was born on August 1, 1865 in Pittsfield MA and later moved to Williamstown, MA. He played semi-pro baseball before becoming a star player in the AAA International League of the minor leagues. Because Jim Crow restrictions were imposed in 1887 that banned African-American players from playing in white-controlled organized baseball, Grant played the remainder of his career in the Negro Leagues and had a successful career with the Cuban Giants.
A bronze plaque contains his image wearing a Cuban Giants uniform and the following inscription:

Frank Grant, born in Pittsfield in 1865, was regarded
by many of his contemporaries as the greatest African-
American baseball player of the 19th century. He moved to
Williamstown in 1871 where he lived with his family on
Spring Street. Playing primarily second base. Grant played
first with the integrated minor league teams before playing a
decade with top Negro league teams. His reputation as a
premier versatile player with speed and a powerful bat was
recognized with his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame
in 2006. Mr. grant died in New York City on May 27, 1937.
