This sign explains the history and function of the Mission;s original tannery vats, which were used to make the Mission's most valuable trading product: leather.
The sign reads as follows:
"ORIGINAL TANNERY VATS
Built-in FRANCISCAN ERA, 1771 1843, cowhides from slaughtered cattle were soaked in vats, filled with solution of water and tanning bark, Oak.
GABRILENO INDIANS, lifting hides from solution, pounded and scrape hair from them. Cured leather was the mission's most valuable barter/trade product.
Vats excavated in 1902 by Father Resa, CMF
