A sign posted by the Claretian Fathers shares the history of these Valencia Orange trees at Mission San Gabriel. The sign reads as follows:
"SAN GABRIEL MISSION [Mission cattle brand]
San Gabriel had the first orange trees in California. The Aqua Tibia Sweet orange trees (Valencia variety) now growing in this area of the gardens are descendants from trees that were DNA tested at 140 years old. These trees started their life in 2004 and were planted here in 2006 with the help of Toots Bier of the Citrus Clonal Protection Program at University of California at Riverside."
