This sign greets you are you exit the gift shop to enter the mission compound through a small gate.
The sign reads as follows:
"OVERLAND EMIGRATION EXPEDITION
In January 1776, San Gabriel Mission was host to Trail Blazer Col. Juan Bautista de Anza and over 200 colonist and soldiers, in route from Sonora, Mexico, to become the first residents of San Francisco. This was the first Overland emigration into Upper Alta California.
Father Font, Diarist, said of San Gabriel, “On our arrival, they killed four sheep, whose meat was good. I do not remember having eaten mutton more fat and tender, also chicken. All of us love San Gabriel Mission, and their cows that give rich milk from which cheese and butter was made.” As Father Paterno says, “It is like the Promised Land.”
