Newton Foust "Newt" Heisley, a commercial artist, designed the iconic, black and white, POW/MIA image for a flag for the National League of Families. United States Congress recognized this organization as "the symbol of our Nation's concern and commitment to resolving as fully as possible the fates of Americans still prisoner, missing and unaccounted for in Southeast Asia, thus ending the uncertainty for their families and the Nation". Heisley's original pencil sketch depicting the silhouette of a soldier with head slightly bowed, a strand of barbed wire, and a watchtower in the background with the words POW-MIA - YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN is widely used on flags and stone monuments in cities and towns across America and around the world.

The Michael F. Curtin Post 8006 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in the Florence section of Northampton, MA has a polished black stone POW/MIA monument inscribed POW-MIA - YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN in front of its building. The 4' by 2' rectangular monument is placed between two slightly smaller inscribed rectangular granite stones. The left stone is inscribed:

WORLD WAR I
WORLD WAR II
KOREAN CONFLICT
VIETNAM CONFLICT
PANAMA
GRANADA
PERSIAN GULF
ALL WARS
AND CONFLICTS

The right stone has the seal of the VFW and the ladies Auxiliary and the following inscription:

IN HONOR OF
ALL MEMBERS OF
MICHAEL F. CURTIN
POST 8006
AND THEIR
LADIES AUXILIARY
